Newsgroups in Netscape 4.x
To establish a connection to the SNET Internet news server using Netscape 4.x:
- Start Communicator and open Netscape Messenger (the email and news component of the Netscape Communicator Suite.)
- Click on "Edit" at the top of the screen and select "Preferences."
- In the ensuing screen, find and click on "Newsgroup Servers" once, to highlight. Then click on "Add."
- In the ensuing box, enter news.snet.sbcglobal.net
- Do NOT put a checkmark in the box that says "Supports encrypted connections" or "Always use username and password." Leave those boxes alone.
- Click "OK."
You will be asked for your username and password when attempting to access the SNET Internet news server. Enter your SNET Internet email address as your username and your SNET Internet password when prompted to do so.
You will be asked if you wish to download the list of newsgroups from the server. You can do so now, or you will be prompted again later. This may take a few minutes, depending on your connection speed. After the list is downloaded, you can subscribe to newsgroups if you wish.For more information on how to use Netscape with newsgroups, please click on "Help" at the top of the screen in Netscape and read under the topic "Newsgroups."
